Italian Cypress Info

The Italian cypress is a medium-sized evergreen conifer native to Croatia, Montenegro, Libya, Albania, Greece and Turkey.

Growth rates up to and beyond 30 m tall are not uncommon. Trunk diameter can exceed 2 m.

The leaves form in dense sprays (scale-like), 5 mm long with a rich dark green colour. The cones are spherical or oblong, 40 mm diameter and tucked tightly into the stems.

This is a must-have ornamental conifer for any landscape project.

This species can live for 600–4000 years and creates a stunning landscape tree.

Growth Habit

Rapid shoot growth usually starts in February and continues until September. Yearly height increases of 0.8–1.8 ft are common beyond season 2. Through mild winters, you get growth all year round.

These were sown this year. Plants are 3" tall.

Saplings are in pots. I recommend they are separated into their own 4" pots when you receive them. Growth rate is fast. Plants can be kept in a cool conservatory, windowsill or outside over the winter months. These trees do really well in all UK weather conditions.

Fully hardy off to minus 18°C or colder come autumn.

Care Instructions

Keep free from competing weeds and never allow to completely dry out. Water logging should also be avoided. Trees will perform best raised outdoors in full sunny position. The growth rate is medium and will soon need re-potting to beyond a 10" pot. Once the trees reach around 1 ft high they can be set in their final planting position.
